College athletics play an important role and fill a significant need in American society. They channel the competitive urge—rooted in human nature—while creating healthy social bonds.  Interscholastic athletics are prominent in virtually every American community, from rural villages to big-city neighborhoods. In small communities, they are often “the only game in town” and provide the primary source of entertainment. Athletics bring people together in the student body as well as within the larger community, generating school loyalty and community involvement.
